What to Expect, Step by Step
Evaluation. An X-ray confirms the root canal filling is sound and the root is suitable.
Post space. A small amount of root filling material is removed to make room for the post.
Post placement. The post is fitted and cemented or bonded inside the root.
Core. Core material is built around the post.
Crown preparation. The tooth is shaped and an impression is taken for the crown.

The decision to use a post and core versus a core buildup alone depends on how much natural tooth structure remains. When the walls of the tooth are largely intact, a core buildup without a post may be sufficient. When the tooth is severely compromised, the post provides the additional internal anchorage needed to keep the entire restoration secure under the forces of chewing. Dr. Marina evaluates each tooth individually to determine the approach that will provide the most reliable long-term result.

A post and core is billed as its own step before the crown, and the fee depends on the type of post: a prefabricated fiber or metal post, or a custom cast post and core shaped to fit an unusual canal. Because it follows root canal treatment, most plans group it with the crown and cover part of it, depending on your plan.
