Dr. Alena Manzon

A root canal is done under local anesthesia, so most patients feel pressure rather than pain, much like getting a filling. The tooth may feel sore for a few days afterward. Dr. Manzon, who holds a postdoctoral certificate in endodontics from NYU, explains each step before she starts.

Common signs include tooth pain that lingers after hot or cold, sharp pain when you bite, a swollen or tender gum near one tooth, a pimple on the gum, or a tooth that has turned darker. Only an exam and an X-ray can confirm it, so book a visit if you notice any of these.

The tooth can often still be saved. Dr. Manzon can perform root canal retreatment, cleaning and resealing the canals. If that is not enough, an apicoectomy removes the infected root tip and seals the end of the root.

Yes. Internal tooth bleaching whitens a single root canal treated tooth from the inside, so it matches the teeth around it without a crown or veneer.
